Why we roast Fair Trade Coffee
Throughout our history, the exploitation of the underprivileged by the fortunate has been not only typical but tragic. To ensure transactions of this kind vanish into the past, businesses have begun to involve themselves with what is known as Fair Trade, a philosophy that ensures artisans and producers, often family farmers living in the world's poorest countries, receive fair prices for their high quality products. This empowers millions of people around the world to remain on their lands, put food on their tables, and keep their kids in school. Ask a farmer about Fair Trade, and you'll hear a story about hope.
In addition to being socially and economically beneficial, Fair Trade is environmentally friendly. Because many Fair Trade farmers live on the lands they cultivate, they are stewards of the Earth. They grow crops in harmony with nature and without the use of harmful chemicals, which may endanger them and the land they depend on.
Know when you buy products with a Fair Trade label you are expressing your respect for the Earth and all live on it. For more information go to www.transfairusa.org .
Why some of our coffee is not Fair Trade
Though not by preference, we may at times opt to roast a coffee from an estate or co-op that is not Fair Trade certified. There are two reasons for this: the region may not yet have a Fair Trade certified producer, or the Fair Trade offering from the region simply fails the quality standards we've come to expect. However, we ALWAYS choose superior quality, Fairly Traded coffees when available. Over 95% of our roasts are Fair Trade certified.
